Ford Supports National Anthem Measure

U.S. Senate candidate Harold Ford Jr. announced today he supports a resolution in the Senate calling for the singing of the National Anthem in English.

“The National Anthem should not be lost in translation,” Rep. Ford said. “Our Anthem describes more than ideas -- it details what Francis Scott Key saw on a night in our history when our very freedom hung in the balance. The words, the phrases, the expressions, they all count for something irreplaceable.

“Freedom and liberty are the same in every language. But we sing our nation's Anthem in the language of our historic common understanding and language of Francis Scott Key. We sing it in English.”

The Senate resolution is to be introduced Tuesday by Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander.

Comments: I think this relreiteratesrates two things I have been saying for some time now.

One, Congressman Ford's values and beliefs are right in line with everyday Tennesseans. And two, Congressman Ford is not afraid to cross the isle to work with Republicans, in this case Senator Alexander (whom he will be serving with starting next year).

Just two more indicators that he will be a U.S. Senator that all Tennesseans can be proud of.

118 Days

Days of Congressional Inaction on Ethics

Above is the number of days that have passed since Jack Abramoff pleaded guilty to bribing Congressman.

It is also the number of days in which Congress has failed to pass an ethics reform bill that would limit private travel, ski and golf junkets, and would call for a full disclosure of expenses by lobbyists on members of Congress.

It is time for Congress to step up and pass an ethics reform bill that would do all of the above. In addition, it is time to end the pork barrel spending system as we know it and establish an independent ethics commission that would review ethics complaints against members of Congress.

I am proud Congressman Harold Ford Jr. is fighting for that reform!
