Ford Laps All Opponents In Fundraising

The latest fundraising numbers are in and once again Harold Ford Jr. has a commanding lead over all his opponents.

In this quarter alone he doubled what Republican big funds man Bob Corker raised.

The Chattanoogan reports, "U.S. Senate candidate Harold Ford, Jr raised $1.5 million last quarter, bringing his total in the campaign raised to more than $5.7 million. The Bob Corker campaign is at $5.5 million.

Rep. Ford said, “I want to thank all who have given to our campaign to bring hope and change to Washington. Your help and generosity have made it possible to share our story and vision for a better future all across the state for the past year. Now, we are headed into the heart of the campaign season. I can't thank our contributors, supporters and believers enough for their financial help and prayers. We will need their and your continued support to win this race.”

“Our success is directly attributable to people’s confidence in Harold Ford’s ability and desire to restore hope to people and get things done in the U.S. Senate. He has done it for almost ten years in the Congress, and will do it in the U.S. Senate,” said finance chairman Charles Robert Bone.

“He is traveling this state and working harder than any other candidate in this race,” Bone said. “Voters are disgusted with Washington’s inability to get things done, and the negative campaigning, mud-slinging and lies that cover up these failures. They want candidates to say they will do in the Senate, not to smear with lies.

“Our campaign will continue to lay out answers to make health care affordable, rein in out-of-control spending in Washington, enhance security on our borders and ports, reform our schools, stop the exodus of good-paying jobs, develop a new energy strategy to liberate us from the tyranny of overseas oil, and develop new approaches in the Iraq war. Congressman Ford knows that the challenges facing Tennesseans are too big and important to be distracted and side-tracked by the pettiness, attacks and lies coming from his opponents,” Bone added.

Today, the Bob Corker for Senate campaign released its first quarter campaign finance totals which showed $5,510,000 in total receipts for the campaign and $770,000 in total receipts for this quarter.

Corker officials said the report "continues to demonstrate Bob Corker’s overwhelming support right here in Tennessee, with 94% of total contributions from in state. The report totals also demonstrate that Tennesseans are increasingly siding with Bob Corker and his conservative Tennessee record."

“The choice in this primary is between two career politicians turned registered lobbyists - and businessman Bob Corker and his record of using conservative principles to achieve positive results. Campaign finance reports show Republicans overwhelmingly prefer Bob Corker’s Tennessee experience using conservative principles over his opponents’ Washington experience lobbying on behalf of special interests,” said Corker campaign manager Ben Mitchell.

100 Days

Days of Congressional Inaction on Ethics

Above is the number of days that have passed since Jack Abramoff pleaded guilty to bribing Congressman.

It is also the number of days in which Congress has failed to pass an ethics reform bill that would limit private travel, ski and golf junkets, and would call for a full disclosure of expenses by lobbyists on members of Congress.

It is time for Congress to step up and pass an ethics reform bill that would do all of the above. In addition, it is time to end the pork barrel spending system as we know it and establish an independent ethics commission that would review ethics complaints against members of Congress.

I am proud Congressman Harold Ford Jr. is fighting for that reform!
