Ford Shines At Maury County Heritage Dinner

On Saturday, my father and I attended the 5th Annual Maury County Democratic Heritage Dinner in Springhill.

The venue (the local UAW hall), as well as the event itself was spectacular. Very elegant and well planned.

In attendance at the event were Congressman Lincoln Davis, Chairman Bob Tuke, as well as all the state and local candidates from the area, and of course, Congressman Harold Ford Jr.

The evening started out with the local Democratic Party honoring some of its members for their dedication and service to the party. After that, local candidates then spoke and were followed by Congressman Davis.

After Congressman Davis finished speaking, Bob Tuke then spoke and introduced Congressman Ford as our next United States Senator. As soon as he was introduced, Ford was greeted by a standing ovation and thunderous applause.

In his speech, the Congressman touched on a number of issues from gas prices to our nation's fiscal crisis to education to Iraq.

Ford made the point that at every time in the history of the United States when we have been confronted with hardship and crisis, the American people have always looked to the Democrat Party for help and that is what they are doing right now. He said that the nation needs new leadership that is ready to tackle the big problems with big thinking.

He ended his speech by urging everyone to stand up for him throughout this race so that we can ensure that future generations have the opportunity to achieve the American dream just as every other generation of Americans have had.

At the conclusion of his speech, Ford was once again given a standing ovation from the adoring crowd. Later, Ford would mingle throughout the crowd for about 30 minutes shaking hands, posing for pictures, as well as signing autographs like a celebrity.

As I have said before, I have never saw a politician be loved by more people than Ford is. Everywhere he goes, he is mobbed by both Democrats and Republicans just wanting to meet him. It simply is amazing. None of the Republicans candidates generate buzz anywhere close to what Ford does.

The energy in the campaign as well as in the Democratic Party remains extremely high. There is no doubt in my mind, Congressman Ford is poised to become our next U.S. Senator come this November.

152 Days

Days of Congressional Inaction on Ethics

Above is the number of days that have passed since Jack Abramoff pleaded guilty to bribing Congressman.

It is also the number of days in which Congress has failed to pass an ethics reform bill that would limit private travel, ski and golf junkets, and would call for a full disclosure of expenses by lobbyists on members of Congress.

It is time for Congress to step up and pass an ethics reform bill that would do all of the above. In addition, it is time to end the pork barrel spending system as we know it and establish an independent ethics commission that would review ethics complaints against members of Congress.

I am proud Congressman Harold Ford Jr. is fighting for that reform!
